Make no mistake – the rhythm guitar that Kevin brings to a performance is NOT simple background instrumentation. He lays down fierce, complex chord rhythms and note patterns that provide an unshakeable foundation for Tom’s sweeping guitar work and vocals. When Kevin steps up to the spotlight he switches with ease to deceptively simple, heart-achingly beautiful instrumental phrasing that places just the right note at just the right moment. His earthy, heart-felt vocals match the deep, bluesy feel of his guitar work. |
Kevin’s honest, open playing comes from a life-long love and exploration of music on his own terms. Encouraged by apparent promise as he pounded away on a toy organ at the age of 6, his parents sent him to piano lessons. But Kevin ditched his instructor (who whacked his fingers with a ruler) and taught himself. Several years later a mind-altering encounter with a Led Zepplin album caused him to pick up the guitar. Again, the lessons; again, another tutorial failure and Kevin sought his own path. The “formal stuff” – music theory, piano lessons, guitar lessons, and vocal instruction – finally caught up with him in his later teens at Febbraio School of Music in Mt. Vernon. Kevin met Tom Dowd around this time, and they have been the heart of Buried in Blue for more than 20 years. In addition to performing, Kevin is a song writer (listen for “Red Sky” at Buried in Blue performances) and composer, writing music film tracks for a film producer-friend. |
